The kindergarten Travesura, located in the neighbourhood of Independencia, is celebrating its 10 years anniversary this year. Even though it is a success now, it has been a long way to get here: “When we started building this place we had one classroom and the kitchen, nothing else.”
Lorena the founder of the kindergarten welcomes us on a grey monday morning with a big smile on her face offering us some mate. While we sit down and share some mate with her, she starts telling us about the many challenges of her country and the construction of Travesura. Thanks to many volunteers from all over the world she has been able to pull this ambitious project off and give the children from this deprived neighbourhood a safe space. “ (here) they can feel comfortable and see it as a place where they can be happy, meet new friends and learn in a safe way.” However, she also mentions the lack of empathy in Argentinian society which is steadily increasing in her opinion. “People here lose trust in any kind of institution.”
